Q: Only some humans have guardian angels, according to The Urantia Book. Why is that if God is not a respecter of persons?

A: I want to thank you for writing to us here at Truthbook with this very good question. We always love to hear from our visitors, and from students of The Urantia Book.

You are correct about the guardian angels. In The Urantia Book, we learn that:

(113:1.1) The teaching about guardian angels is not a myth; certain groups of human beings do actually have personal angels.

And then you wonder why, if God is no respecter of persons, all people are not gifted with personal angels. This is a good question, and we can find the answers in this same section I quoted above, called The Guardian Angels

First and foremost, we learn that:

(113:1.2) Originally, the seraphim were definitely assigned to the separate Urantia races. But since the bestowal of Michael, they are assigned in accordance with human intelligence, spirituality, and destiny.

I would suggest that you click on the link and read about the kinds of intellectual categories of human beings. You'll see that, even those people of subnormal mind are fellowshipped by angelic ministry.

The assignment of personal guardians is given according to attainment by an individual - attainment of spiritual benchmarks. These benchmarks are indicated by the "circles of human progress and spiritual development."

In this section we learn that circle attainment is a result of "successive conquest of the seven psychic circles of mortal potentiality." This indicates that such attainment is through personal initiative towards spiritual growth. Not all persons are inclined to pursue such spiritual growth, and this quote seems to indicate that those that are, and who make progress in this area, are given personal angels because they have been earned, in a sense.

From this section:

(110:6.13) "The seventh circle. This level is entered when human beings develop the powers of personal choice, individual decision, moral responsibility, and the capacity for the attainment of spiritual individuality. This signifies the united function of the seven adjutant mind-spirits under the direction of the spirit of wisdom, the encircuitment of the mortal creature in the influence of the Holy Spirit, and, on Urantia, the first functioning of the Spirit of Truth, together with the reception of a Thought Adjuster in the mortal mind. Entrance upon the seventh circle constitutes a mortal creature a truly potential citizen of the local universe.

"The third circle. The Adjuster's work is much more effective after the human ascender attains the third circle and receives a personal seraphic guardian of destiny. While there is no apparent concert of effort between the Adjuster and the seraphic guardian, nonetheless there is to be observed an unmistakable improvement in all phases of cosmic achievement and spiritual development subsequent to the assignment of the personal seraphic attendant. When the third circle is attained, the Adjuster endeavors to morontiaize the mind of man during the remainder of the mortal life span, to make the remaining circles, and achieve the final stage of the divine-human association before natural death dissolves the unique partnership."

And:

(110:6.17) "The motivation of faith makes experiential the full realization of man's sonship with God, but action, completion of decisions, is essential to the evolutionary attainment of consciousness of progressive kinship with the cosmic actuality of the Supreme Being. Faith transmutes potentials to actuals in the spiritual world, but potentials become actuals in the finite realms of the Supreme only by and through the realization of choice-experience. But choosing to do the will of God joins spiritual faith to material decisions in personality action and thus supplies a divine and spiritual fulcrum for the more effective functioning of the human and material leverage of God-hunger.

It is true that "God is no respecter of persons," and this is shown by the fact that all of his children are given the same chances for spiritual advancement - all have available to them the same spiritual agencies - just as the sun and the rain fall on both the just and the unjust. But not all of God's children have the same spiritual longings or have accomplished the same spiritual achievements - action, and choice-experience. And so, this appears to be the reason for the fact that only certain individuals are given personal angels.

It would be very difficult to discern who has a personal angel and who does not, but it would seem that if we carefully read these sections which are linked above, we can help ourselves to understand what is needed to reach that point where we may at least imagine that we have such heavenly help...of course, staying close to God, dedicating our wills to do his will, and a thorough study of The Urantia Book can only help us as we pursue our spiritual quest...

"The teaching about guardian angels is not a myth; certain groups of human beings do actually have personal angels. It was in recognition of this that Jesus, in speaking of the children of the heavenly kingdom, said: "Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones, for I say to you, their angels do always behold the presence of the spirit of my Father." (113:1.1)

Not everyone has a guardian angel, however. In further reading from the passage given above, we learn:

What are spiritual influences?

Q: What are spiritual influences?

A: That's a good question. The Urantia Book has a lot to tell us about spiritual influences and students of the book don't necessarily agree upon what it says so I can only give you my perception.

We're told that our world teems with spiritual influences â€“ various orders of angels involved in myriad tasks and beings who are midway between material beings like ourselves and the angels whom we can't see. Our minds are also inhabited by a spiritual spark of God the Father ministering incessantly to help spiritualize our thoughts throughout this short life in the flesh. None of these influences however are perceived by our senses so it's as if we're alone and without their ministry, although that's not the case.

Some people (even believers in the Urantia revelation) like to believe that they're more spiritually sensitive than average and that they have special spiritual connections â€“ that they can communicate with spirit beings or with the "dead" and can relay messages from them. The Urantia Book doesn't teach that this is so â€“ what it does teach is that one should strive to be open to spiritual guidance but that on the whole we should learn to be the best material beings we know how to be and not become overly involved in psychic experiences â€“ we're given this material life for a purpose that is of more value than is striving to be "more spiritual than material." We'll have the rest of eternity to be spiritual â€“ we have now to be material.

How do you know that God loves you?

Q: How do you know that God loves you?

A: First, Iâ€™d like to apologize for the length of time itâ€™s taken to get an answer back to you â€” we usually like to have replies sent within a couple of days at least and this is an excellent question. Youâ€™ve asked how do you know so Iâ€™ll reply how I know by first referring to some quotes from The Urantia Book. Long ago when I first started to study this book I accepted its message as being valid and true to me and that is still the case so to me these words ring true. The links at the end of the quotes will take you into the book if you'd like to read more.

The Father's love follows us now and throughout the endless circle of the eternal ages. As you ponder the loving nature of God, there is only one reasonable and natural personality reaction thereto: You will increasingly love your Maker; you will yield to God an affection analogous to that given by a child to an earthly parent; for, as a father, a real father, a true father, loves his children, so the Universal Father loves and forever seeks the welfare of his created sons and daughters. (2:5.9)

Though many of the temple rituals very touchingly impressed his sense of the beautiful and the symbolic, he was always disappointed by the explanation of the real meanings of these ceremonies which his parents would offer in answer to his many searching inquiries. Jesus simply would not accept explanations of worship and religious devotion which involved belief in the wrath of God or the anger of the Almighty. In further discussion of these questions, after the conclusion of the temple visit, when his father became mildly insistent that he acknowledge acceptance of the orthodox Jewish beliefs, Jesus turned suddenly upon his parents and, looking appealingly into the eyes of his father, said: "My father, it cannot be true â€“ the Father in heaven cannot so regard his erring children on earth. The heavenly Father cannot love his children less than you love me. And I well know, no matter what unwise thing I might do, you would never pour out wrath upon me nor vent anger against me. If you, my earthly father, possess such human reflections of the Divine, how much more must the heavenly Father be filled with goodness and overflowing with mercy. I refuse to believe that my Father in heaven loves me less than my father on earth." (125:0.6)

"John came preaching repentance to prepare you for the kingdom; now have I come proclaiming faith, the gift of God, as the price of entrance into the kingdom of heaven. If you would but believe that my Father loves you with an infinite love, then you are in the kingdom of God." (137:8.17)

"You well know that, while a kindhearted father loves his family as a whole, he so regards them as a group because of his strong affection for each individual member of that family. No longer must you approach the Father in heaven as a child of Israel but as a child of God. As a group, you are indeed the children of Israel, but as individuals, each one of you is a child of God. I have come, not to reveal the Father to the children of Israel, but rather to bring this knowledge of God and the revelation of his love and mercy to the individual believer as a genuine personal experience. The prophets have all taught you that Yahweh cares for his people, that God loves Israel. But I have come among you to proclaim a greater truth, one which many of the later prophets also grasped, that God loves you â€“ every one of you â€“ as individuals. All these generations have you had a national or racial religion; now have I come to give you a personal religion. (145:2.4)

"And now you should give ear to my words lest you again make the mistake of hearing my teaching with the mind while in your hearts you fail to comprehend the meaning. From the beginning of my sojourn as one of you, I taught you that my one purpose was to reveal my Father in heaven to his children on earth. I have lived the God revealing bestowal that you might experience the God knowing career. I have revealed God as your Father in heaven; I have revealed you as the sons of God on earth. It is a fact that God loves you, his sons. By faith in my word this fact becomes an eternal and living truth in your hearts. When, by living faith, you become divinely God conscious, you are then born of the spirit as children of light and life, even the eternal life wherewith you shall ascend the universe of universes and attain the experience of finding God the Father on Paradise. (193:0.3)

Putting the words of The Urantia Book aside there are many practical ways I know God loves me. First, I have the freedom to choose rightly or wrongly; the heavenly Father loves me enough to allow me to make my own mistakes. The heavenly Father loves me enough to have made me unique â€” I experience and react to the world around me in a different way from everyone else. I have firsthand experience that circumstances I would not have chosen for myself have nevertheless worked out for my good. I know that Godâ€™s ministers, the angels, have intervened and helped me when necessary. I live assured that God has a plan that is bigger than and extends far beyond this life â€” that God loves me enough to have made provision for my continued growth and experience when my life here is through. God loves me because of the inconsequential things that make life joyful â€” chocolate, butterflies, fireflies, tiger cubs, strawberries, ...

Does each person have a guardian angel?

Q: Does each person have a guardian angel?

A: The Urantia Book provides specific answers to this question. We've put much of the angel information under one category on our site which you may want to review - just click on the "Angels are Real" link on our home page.

As to whether each person has a guardian angel, yes and no. Every person who has attained a minimum spiritual status has a guardian angel. Their angel may also be responsible for a thousand other mortals as well, each of them being under the angel's charge. As we become more spiritually attuned the groups we're associated with under an angel's charge become smaller and there are people who are exclusively assigned a guardian angel pair. This applies here during this life as well as in the life to come.

Questions About Angels

Q: Who was the first angel?

A: I guess that's something you're going to have to wait to have answered in the mansion worlds. Since we're in a small area of just one of the superuniverses that orbit around paradise and since the other superuniverses were inhabited before ours was, the first angel would have been created for the first free will creatures of the first superuniverse long before where we reside was even created.

You'll have more success in trying to learn who the angels of your supervision are â€“ they'd be of more importance to you.

Q: Can it be possible to talk to you guardian angels and get a response back?

A: Rather than just saying no it would be better to say anything is possible; it's just very improbable that you will ever actually talk to your guardian angels or even know for certain they're there. They're called guardian angels because they watch over you; it's not in their job description to convince you that they're there, to make life easier for you or to talk to you, however much you may desire it. Just knowing they're there and that you're loved is blessing enough.

Q: Are angels only men?

A: Angels aren't sex creatures like we are but they do have positive or negative energy attributes similar to masculine or feminine traits. The angels we encounter in the Bible tend to have masculine names like Michael, Gabriel and Emmanuel but those beings weren't really angels in the strict sense â€“ they're beings of a different order from the angels who actually minister to us. The ministering angels tend to work in positive and negative energy pairs â€“ both masculine and feminine.
